Very early this morning a staff member was the subject of an attempted robbery in a  car park adjacent to the school in Cromwell St. The staff member was assaulted and taken to hospital. She was released from hospital later in the morning and she is recovering well  at home. Despite being quite shaken, she is in good spirits and her injuries are not serious or life threatening.

This incident, involving a passing member of the public, sends the message that we all need to be vigilant in our travels to and from school. This was an isolated incident but we will continue to review all aspects of safety for the entire community.

The car park and loading bay to the school was quarantined as a crime scene and l apologise for the anxiety this may have caused for some students. We made every effort to direct students and families arriving this morning away from this area. Unfortunately some students overheard media broadcasts on their way to school. I would ask all parents discuss the matter openly with their children tonight or over the coming days but focus on the positive – that the staff member is safe and well. Also, please be mindful of age appropriateness in your discussions. If any students need counselling or supports then please do not hesitate to contact the school and services will be arranged immediately.

The Deputy Premier and Minister for Education, James Merlino rang today offering his support and thoughts for the school community.  NWR also provided counselling services for staff and students which is the par in critical incidents like these.  In an effort to minimise the impact of this incident, we maintained a very normal approach to the day. I would like to thank all the staff and my leadership for their wonderful support in what has been a very sad and disappointing day. We hope as a community we can move on and leave this nasty distraction behind.  I thank you for your anticipated understanding in the matter.
