Canteen Update – Parent’s Association

Dear Families

The results of the Parent Association Canteen Survey are in with approximately a quarter of our families responding! Wow! What an amazing community voice we have harnessed to contribute to the decision making process. Thanks to everyone who took the time to do the survey.

Overwhelmingly our community expressed 4 core values:

1.       Healthy, fresh, tasty, wholesome, unprocessed, nutritious food, prepared on site.

2.       Catering for diverse needs including: vegetarian, Halal, vegan, food intolerances.

3.       Sense of Community – friendly, strong relationship with the school, great personal service, friendly and familiar faces, staff who like children, good communicators, responsive to needs

4.       Low cost – affordable, value for money

As a community we said a big NO to:

  • Processed foods, junk foods, high fat and sugar foods.
  • pre-packaged or fried foods
  • soft drinks and juice
  • commercial food provision instead of a community oriented hub.

There was HUGE support and appreciation for Sherrian, and the current canteen team for establishing such a wonderful expression of community and good food at CC. As one survey respondent said: the canteen has become (another) warm heart of the school, welcoming and nurturing parents, children and staff.

The Parent’s Association is also working hard to keep you informed and we can report to you that School Council has gone through the process of finding a new Canteen operator and has appointed a Working Group which includes a number of School Councillors. This group developed a set of criteria and considered applications.

The Working Group has now reported back to the School Council Finance Subcommittee. Parents Association Representatives on that committee are excited to report to our parent community that a canteen operator has been found that meets the core needs expressed by parents in the survey – people who understand our community and want to provide healthy, reasonably priced food including some of our current favourites.

The decision will be ratified next Thursday at the School Council meeting so stand by for news next Friday! We will provide you with all the information you need for the start of term 3 including the menu and prices. For those interested, we’ll also send out more comprehensive data from the survey.

Kind regards
